Draught Surveys

Search Our Site

One of the most important elements of the maritime industry is the Draught Survey. A draught survey is a method of cargo weight determination by ship's displacement calculations, empty and loaded (or loaded and empty), taking into account any change in weight of the liquids on board. Our surveyors at JBIS Integrated Resources work according to defined international guidelines when determining the weight of the cargo and consider several key factors while making their surveys. These factors include:

  •  Water density of the sea, river or other waterway
  •  Changes in the ballast quantity between initial and final draft readings
  •  Changes in the vessel’s consumables (e.g. fuel oil, drinking water) between initial and final draft readings
  •  Trim and deformation corrections (we use data from the vessel’s draft tables)

The accuracy of the draught survey will be dependent upon the experience and the care taken by the surveyor concerned, on the documentation of the vessel, on the spirit of co-operation of the vessel crews and of the shore terminal personnel and, last but not least, on the instruments used by the draught surveyor and the weather and sea conditions in the harbour.

Our draught surveyors feed the raw data from their readings into JBIS Integrated Services unique draft survey software. This program calculates the weight loaded (or discharged) using the internationally standardized draft survey protocol. We then compile the resulting findings into a draft survey report containing all of the details obtained during the survey. You can use this report as the basis for quantity certification of the cargo.
